  • Gabriele Stötzer's work concentrate on the role of women in art at an early age. During the German Democratic Republic (GDR) period, she was looking for female artists in the GDR, but the culture scene was dominated by male artists at that time. Now Gabriele Stötzer wants to bring her art from the GDR period into a new framework, and in drawing she can unfold in the most free way. Her lyrics have already been projected via light installations in Erfurt and Leipzig. A kind of female self-discovery, which she now puts on Schwanenwerder in figures and text on canvas.

  • Since the late 1970s, the artist Gabriele Stötzer has been pursuing artistic self-exploration, often in the face of cultural, social and political resistance. Stötzer’s works, which employ photography, painting, drawing, ceramics, textile, performance, film, text and fashion objects, were not only directed against the policy of the former GDR, which attempted to negate any form of individuality; they also resisted heteronormative role models and other social norms. The focus of her works has always been on the female body, which resisted notions of the masculine and posited a subversive counter-image to state and social guidelines both provocatively and demandingly. The exhibition in the Pankow Gallery presents Stötzer’s photographic portrayals of the self and the body as well as the original manuscripts from the years 1981 to 1984.

  • This publication comprises 13 unique artist books with photographs, drawings, printed graphics, and texts by Gabriele Stötzer—one of the most important German feminist artists of her generation. Originally created between 1982 and 1988, each of these works reveals a fascinating as well as abundant imagery diving into her artistic work and personal experiences. As fanfolds or photo tableaux mounted on card or in plastic sleeves, bound with carpet tape, stapled or ringbound, these books were self-published outside the tightly controlled approval procedures of GDR press. With the female body and its immanent potential to challenge gender roles, this medium reflects Stötzer’s non-conformist and hard-won freedom of living and, now officially published for the first time, unfolds its full power.
